6.08 Safe to install
Alti-Watcher is an application specifically designed to monitor the elevation gained during mountain hiking. It effectively utilizes both GPS and barometric data to provide accurate altitude readings.
The initial location and altitude are obtained through the GPS module, transitioning to barometric measurements after approximately 30 seconds. This ensures a continuous recording of elevation changes even when the phone’s screen is off. When the sleep prevention mode is activated, the GPS is turned off while maintaining the barometer's functionality.
The compass feature includes a dial indicating the sun’s position at sunrise and sunset, represented by a yellow dot for sunrise and a red dot for sunset, accompanied by a level marker signified by two concentric circles.
Data presentation is offered on daily, monthly, and cumulative bases. The monthly graph illustrates performance across all days of the current and previous months, highlighting the best daily performance in red. Additionally, a second graph tracks results across current and prior years, with a capacity to display data for up to ten years. The total result for each month or year is distinctly marked in red.
Upon completion of a route recording, users can access the profile charts tab to view the current route profile. These charts can be organized by date, elevation, or trip duration in descending order, with options to name or delete specific route profile charts. Users can also export these charts as JPG files saved in the Alti-Watcher/charts directory on their devices for sharing purposes.
The application features an audio cue that plays every 20 meters of climbing or descending by default, which can be adjusted or disabled according to user preference. This function enhances usability, especially when carrying the phone in a backpack during hikes.
Additionally, users have the option to record altitude gain and trail profiles with the flexibility to pause recordings during rest periods. Automatic pausing occurs after eight hours of inactivity, though this duration can be customized between four and forty-eight hours.
Implementing dim screen and sleep prevention modes significantly improves altitude reading accuracy while only slightly increasing energy consumption. A high refresh rate mode captures profile charts at one-second intervals; however, these results are not saved in this mode.
To ensure precise barometric calibration, users can select an appropriate temperature range, visually represented by a thermometer in the altimeter view. Importantly, the application does not collect or transmit any user data; database backups are securely stored on the device and can be restored if necessary.
For optimal performance of the barometer feature, it is essential to enable Fitness Tracking in the device settings:
- Open the 'Settings' app.
- Navigate to 'Privacy & Security'.
- Select 'Motion & Fitness'.
- Activate the 'Fitness Tracking' toggle.

FAQ
What is Alti-watcher and what does it do?
Alti-watcher is an iPhone/iPad app by Adam Mazur that provides altimeter, barometer, compass, electronic level, altitude counting (meters climbed), route profile charts, and daylight information. It is designed for hikers to record climbed meters and route profiles.
How does Alti-watcher measure altitude?
The app initially reads location and altitude from GPS, then (after ≈30 seconds) switches to altitude readings based on the device's built-in barometer for ongoing measurements and recording.
Can Alti-watcher record my hikes and save route profiles?
Yes. The app can record meters climbed and the trail profile. You can pause/resume recordings, set automatic stop time (4–48 hours), and save profile charts as JPG files in On My iPhone -> Alti-watcher -> charts.
Does Alti-watcher sync data across devices or back up data?
Yes. The app supports iCloud synchronization for new results and route profile charts. It also stores a local database backup on your phone which can be used to restore data; backups are not sent elsewhere.
Are my data collected or transferred to the developer or third parties?
No. The developer states the application does not collect or transfer any data. The database backup is stored locally on the phone (and optionally in your iCloud if you use iCloud sync).
Does Alti-watcher work with the Apple Watch?
Yes. The app provides Apple Watch support. Recent updates improved the Watch display when recording is inactive (added altitude and daily results).
Can I get audio alerts while hiking?
Yes. The app can play a sound at regular elevation increments (default every 20 m up or down). You can change the increment or disable the sound; audio is useful when the phone is in your pack.
What measurement units does Alti-watcher use? Can I switch to feet?
Altitude readings based on the barometer are provided in meters. Due to platform API limits, the minimum barometer resolution is 1 meter; the app does not provide barometric altitude in smaller units like feet for those readings.
What settings help improve altitude accuracy and battery life?
Options include Dim Screen and Prevent Sleep (improves barometer accuracy at a small power cost), High Refresh Rate (1-second profile recording; note results may not be saved in this mode), and a selectable temperature range to calibrate the barometer for better altitude accuracy.
Are there any permissions or system settings I need to enable?
Yes. For the barometer to work you must enable Fitness Tracking: Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Motion & Fitness -> turn on Fitness Tracking. The app also uses GPS when recording routes and for initial altitude/location reading.
